The region has large quantities of unexploited mineral deposits of gold, diamond , tanzanite , high grade tin, Tungsten/wolfram, salt, beryllium, cobalt, kaolin, iron-ore, glass sand, vermiculite and phosphates (fertilizer). A discovery of petroleum wells in Uganda and Kenya n has dramatically expanded the sector. There are also significant quantities of clay and gypsum.
