Tree farming is the process of planting a large number of tree seedlings and maintaining them until they mature into mature trees. The mature trees are harvested and applied to various uses.

1

How to Plant a Tree

Trees should be well spaced to provide space for them to full mature in height and size. Young  trees should be provided with enough water for them  to adjust to the new environment and  start growing. Some young trees may require mulching around the tree stem to protect them  from  the direct heat of the sun or heavy running water.

2

Trees are of vital importance to human beings, animals and the environment. The uses of trees include;

Habitat for wildlife

A number of animals and plants thrive in an environment with trees. They protect watersheds, provide habitats for wildlife and help to stabilize otherwise fragile ecosystems.

3

Useful in the backyard

Trees protect  against strong winds that lead to crop damage and heavy rains that lead to soil erosion. Trees also provide shade for people and animals in hot weather.

4

Wood and timber

Wood and timber are used in construction and as an energy source. Some industrial processes such as tobacco and tea curing, brick firing and beer brewing often rely entirely on wood for process heat.

6

Charcoal and firewood

Trees provide firewood and logs that can be burnt into charcoal. These are important fuel sources for many families across Africa and in other parts of the world

7

Other products

Trees provide fodder for animals and building poles. Ropes, glue, mats, baskets, snares, coverings, boats, woven goods and many musical instruments can be made from trees. Tannins and dyes extracted from tree bark and seed pods are used to cure leather and color fabrics.

Medicinal properties

Trees are an important source of many herbal remedies and traditional medicines.

5

Oxygen

A mature leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale in a year. Trees acts as a giant filter that cleans the air we breathe.

8

Increase real estate value

Real estate values increase when trees beautify  the neighborhood.

9

Income

Trees provide income from the sale of wood and other products.

Clean the soil

They absorb dangerous chemicals and other pollutants.

10

Cleanse the air

Trees help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide.
